Just when I was getting comfortable

I have been keeping quiet about changes at work for a few weeks, but I can now tell you that my job is changing when I come back from parental leave next December.  I won’t be doing biochemistry anymore – I’ll be working in a great group of sensory scientists instead.

Sensory work (taste/smell trials of fruit, wine, olive oil, etc) is a big part of what my now-merged company does, and we have an excellent facility and team doing this work.  They needed someone who could run projects, work with people, and write papers, and I needed a permanent contract.  It’s a win-win situation for everyone except my existing coworkers – I was really dreading telling them about this move, but they have been really supportive.

From a logistics perspective, this will work out well.  I was already going to be gone in two weeks; now I’m just not coming back to the same team afterwards.

Anyway, I’m excited, and I can’t believe I have to wait a whole year before I get to work on new and exciting things (at work).

Wow, that work sounds really interesting! Please tell us all about it when you get started next year.

That does sound interesting – and how lovely to have a whole year to get used to being a parent!

I’m sure they’d understand – after all, the permanent contract thing is kinda important…
