I’m super-busy at work (what’s new?), and good things are afoot in the background. I’m pretty close to abandoning my InaDWriMo efforts, sadly – I’m having enough issues just trying to do these things (in no particular order):

  1. find people to do all the stuff I currently do at work, and “train” them to do it – before 12 December
  2. organize a workshop to teach my coworkers what an SOP is (hint: it’s a Standard Operating Procedure) and how to write one – planned for 2 December
  3. write a talk for this conference – by the end of this week – and then practice it copiously before giving it next Thursday
  4. finish my experiments in the lab!  This is going to be the toughest one – I’m trying to have everything done by 5 December so I can spend the week of 8-12 Dec either at home or just tidying things up nicely without having to run any experiments or put out any fires.
  5. give all my data etc to my labmates so they can carry on while I’m gone

But what I was really wanting to write about was this great quote from an entry on the Facebook blog:

When I log into Facebook and see News Feed stories about my friends and photos they’ve uploaded, it displaces time and space and brings us back together again no matter how far or long we have been apart.

This is absolutely true, and it’s why I like Facebook.  It works with old friends, new friends, and people I’ve never met before.  It doesn’t annoy me like MySpace.  It plays nicely with Twitter and other cool web apps.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

P.S. It’s a girl.

I completely agree about Facebook — I would have lost touch with so many people without it. My husband is fortunate in that all his closest friends (from high school) are all still based out of the same city so when he returns home, he gets to see them. I, on the other hand, have my friends spread across the world, so while I may not get to see them more than once every few years, it’s so easy to keep up with what they are doing, even if I don’t have time to call them.

And how exciting to know the gender. :) It’s amazing how far imaging has come these days. 25 years ago, my mother’s OB was convinced I was going to be a boy. As it turns out, the first thing my father said upon my deliver was.. “It’s not a Jeffrey.”

Congratulations! I had a funny feeling it would be a girl.
Good luck with your last few weeks before she arrives!
